Steve Staios: Hamilton Bulldogs General Manager
Steve Staios has taken over as General Manager of the Hamilton Bulldogs, and perform this role in tandem with his role as the President of the organization. Staios is able to assume these increased responsibilities thanks to the team’s elevation of Jeff Elias to the role of Senior Director of Business Development, leaving Staios with more time to commit to player evaluation and acquisition.
Staios got right down to work addressing various levels of media after the team broke the news. He spoke with TSN 1150’s Steve Milton and Marshall Ferguson shortly after the team published their press release announcing the dismissal of former GM and Head Coach George Burnett. He also reached out to Teri Pecoski at The Hamilton Spectator (link), and spoke with Scott Radley during his AM 900 CHML radio show (link). A very busy night for the new GM, and provided some very interesting insight into why he believes in his ability to make this a winning move for the young organization.
“I’ve been very lucky since I retired to be able to touch all aspects of hockey organizations, both at the pro level and now at the junior level. I lean on those experience and those people that have mentored me and that I’ve learned from in that area. You know to come to a decision like we did today, a big decision for our organization, it wasn’t like I sat in a room by myself and tried to figure it out. I reached out and tried to figure out what the best organizations at every level do and how they become successful”. (Source: Milton and Marsh, April 4, 2016)
Staios has shown himself over the course of his career to be a confident leader. He oozes hockey intelligence thanks to a very successful NHL career as a player with over 1000 games played, as well as his work with the Toronto Maple Leafs as Player Development Advisor and Assistant Coach. There is ample evidence that he is an open minded leader who is willing to seek advice and listens to hockey minds he respects, excellent attributes a GM needs to be successful. Over the past year, Staios was very visible with fans during games, in local arenas scouting midget players, and representing the organization throughout the region as a leader in business. There is every reason to believe that Staios is going to be able to direct the Hamilton Bulldogs towards being a model of excellence in the Ontario Hockey League.
“We’re going to put in place here an organization that’s as close to if not identical to a professional organization. I don’t want there to be any gaps in our organization moving forward, on the business side and especially on the hockey side”. – Steve Staios on the vision he has for the Hamilton Bulldogs (link)
