Bulldogs at 55: Jacob Pivonka
The Hamilton Bulldogs have selected forward Jacob Pivonka Chicago Mission 16U. Daryl Woodley said “stats were a little deceiving, one of the most skilled guys from the US”. Committed to Notre Dame’s hockey program when he was 14, this might be a player who will spend next season south of the border and maybe make a rookie appearance as a 17 year old. Some very exciting reports from scouts, this guy could eventually be hailed as a steal by the Bulldogs brass. Must be a favourite pick of Bulldogs import defender, Ondrej Kachyna. Pivonka is the son of retired Washington Capital Michael Pivonka, who was a soviet defect. Jacob is a fluent speaker of Czech thanks to his parents.
OHL Central Scouting – “Jacob is a dynamic offensive player that you notice every time he is on the ice. He has blazing speed and is constantly challenging the opposition. He is explosive off the mark which allows him to win a lot of races for loose pucks. He has great one-on-one skills and isn’t afraid to take the puck to the net or pull up and make a nice pass to one of his teammates. He has great offensive instincts and skills. He is one of the top offensive talents in the USA this year“.
The Scout, Draft Guide – Pivonka is an intense offensive competitor with excellent shooting skills. Arguably the hungriest offensive player available in the age group, Pivonka plays the game full throttle every time he takes the ice. Doesn’t possess the biggest frame but he plays the game as if he were 6-foot-4 – often dominating with his strength and power. Posseses strong edgework to surprise defenders and drive around them while softly protecting the puck. Gets to loose pucks with his quick first few steps. Good open ice skater, drives through contact with strong legs and can quickly shift laterally. Uses a wide, lateral vision set to see teammates across the ice. Not overly tall, but has a filled out, sturdy frame that allows for a heavy presence in puck battles. Capable of fighting through checks and getting into the scoring areas where he unleashes a pro-calibre snap shot. He requires little to no time or preparation to release his shot and always shoots to score. Strong skater with a powerful stride and is able to be shifty with his moves too. Works well coming out of the corners, identifying options quickly. Exhibits sharp hockey sense and uses, smart positioning and strong possession tools to leave his impact. Pivonka is a player that teams will build around, not only because of his overall skill set but also due to his outstanding intangibles“. (Source)
