The Hamilton Bulldogs Trade Cole Candella

The Hamilton Bulldogs Trade Cole Candella

Cole Candella, one of the last remaining Belleville Bulls playing in the OHL, joins the wolfpack in Sudbury. With the Wolves, Candella should be able to see far more ice time on a rebuilding team, which will be essential for his professional development. Hamilton’s depth on the blueline includes solid over-age defenders and exciting youth options. Overall this trade is going to be beneficial for both organizations as well as the player.

Less than 24 hours before the trade was announced I was wondering if there could have been a move available for GM Steve Staios to capitalize on in light of the Flint/London Mattinen deal. London received more picks out of Flint than Sudbury sends for Candella, which is quite the head scratcher. Offensively, Candella is a superior option and he has more experience that Mattinen, so Sudbury is looking very smart this week.

Ben Leeson is the Wolves beat reporter for the Sudbury Star, and you should read his solid interview with Candella regarding the trade here. What really caught my eye was this quote about the trade:

“I had a lot of emotions. I wasn’t sure what was going on, but then I heard Sudbury was trying to acquire me. I talked to my agent and my parents and we all felt it was a great opportunity for me. After I accepted the trade, I felt like I was going into a new environment, which is going to be good for me, and getting to know a new team and a new coaching staff, so it’s a great opportunity for me to take hold of and really get things going.”

It’s interesting that Sudbury was targeting Candella as a potential asset earlier in the summer. This is a reaction to help offset the loss of Owen Lalonde, but also to help shore up some veteran leadership. It shouldn’t come a surprise that Hamilton had their name organization circled as they were capable of bringing back all of their defenders from last season.

Two weeks ago I examined Candella’s development and how this season is essential for his development as a player and the chase for an ELC with the Canucks next season. You can check it out here.
